Coastal erosion is the gradual progressive change of the coastline due to tides and weather influences. In addition to natural events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, storm surges and tsunamis, anthropogenic influences can also contribute to erosion by obstructing the natural transport path of sand (e.g., through the construction of a dam).
Coastal erosion can reduce the human habitat and destroy infrastructure or economically used areas. Tourism is also negatively affected by coastal erosion, as beaches, for example, can no longer be used in the same way. Additionally, as erosion progresses, the natural habitats of flora and fauna on land and in the sea change, which can result in a loss of biodiversity.
To determine the risk, we analyze globally available data sets that indicate the projected future changes to the coastline.
