Ocean acidification occurs when (mainly anthropogenic) carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by the oceans, which leads to a chemical change in seawater. Ocean acidification has negative effects on marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The loss of biodiversity can affect millions of people who depend on fishing, aquaculture, or natural coastal protection, such as coral reefs or mangroves. The corrosion of technical objects in the sea could theoretically be influenced by ocean acidification. However, it is assumed that the currently expected pH fluctuations, ranging from 7.8 to 8.2, will not cause any significant changes to these objects.
